Is this Marrakech’s most atmospheric hotel?

Marrakech has a way of getting under your skin quickly. It’s the heat, for one – the dry, enveloping kind that hits you as soon as you step off the plane. Then the rhythm of it all: the low hum of scooters, the call to prayer drifting over rooftops, the constant movement through the medina’s narrow, winding streets.

It’s intense in the best possible way, but it doesn’t take long before you start to crave the contrast.

Right now, it feels like more travellers are approaching Marrakech slightly differently. Still drawn by the colour and energy, but balancing it with space – choosing to dip in and out of the city rather than stay right in the middle of it. And it works. A morning in the souks, an unhurried lunch on a rooftop, then back out to somewhere quieter as the day begins to soften.

Timing plays its part too. Spring and autumn are, unsurprisingly, the most comfortable – warm, clear days that make exploring easy – but even in the hotter months, the city settles into its own rhythm. Early starts, long shaded lunches, slow evenings. You adapt without really noticing.

It’s this balance, between energy and stillness, that makes Marrakech feel so relevant right now.

Our Journey & Experiences Manager, Helen Risi, recently returned from the city, where she stayed just outside the centre at The Oberoi. Here, she shares her experience:

Some places impress you, and then there are the ones that completely shift your sense of what travel can feel like. My stay at The Oberoi Marrakech sat firmly in the second category.

Set just outside the energy of the city, The Oberoi Marrakech feels removed in the best possible way. The intensity of the medina softens into birdsong, olive trees moving in the breeze, and the gentle sound of water through the gardens. From the moment I arrived, everything felt calm and considered – luxury here is subtle, more about space and atmosphere than anything overt.

The architecture draws you in straight away. Inspired by traditional Moroccan palaces and medersas, there’s a real sense of detail throughout – zellige tiles, carved plasterwork, and long colonnades. Wide courtyards and reflective pools create symmetry and stillness, while the Atlas Mountains sit quietly in the distance.

I was lucky enough to stay in one of the Royal Villas, which felt less like a hotel room and more like somewhere you could properly settle into for as long as physically possible. With its own heated pool and private garden, it offered complete privacy without ever feeling cut off. Mornings were slow – coffee on the terrace, soft light through the trees, and no real agenda for the day.

What stayed with me most was the pace. Nothing feels rushed here. Time stretches in a way that’s increasingly rare – whether walking through the citrus groves, spending an afternoon by the main pool, or retreating to the spa, which is genuinely worth setting time aside for.

Dining was another highlight. The menus balance Moroccan flavours with a lighter, more contemporary approach, and everything felt carefully done without being overworked. Breakfast was a highlight. It arrived more like an afternoon tea than a traditional start to the day – tiers of fresh pastries, vibrant juices, and a generous spread. Service is worth mentioning as well. It’s not formal or overly present, but it’s incredibly intuitive. Things just seem to happen at the right moment, without you really noticing. That balance is rare, and they get it right.

What I wasn’t expecting was how personal it would feel. The resort is expansive, but it never felt busy or impersonal. If anything, it had the opposite effect – like stepping into a quieter, slower version of daily life. At one point I realised I hadn’t looked at my phone for most of the afternoon, which probably says everything.

Leaving wasn’t easy. It’s the kind of place that stays with you, not just because of how it looks, but because of how it makes you feel.
