The best luxury holidays for October half term 2026

October half term has become one of the most anticipated weeks in the family travel calendar. It’s an opportunity to press pause before the run-up to Christmas, swap grey skies for a week of sunshine and spend uninterrupted time together while the children are off school.

With just a week to travel, choosing the right destination matters. Some families are looking for guaranteed warmth without travelling too far, while others want to make the most of the holidays with a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Whether that’s a few days exploring Dubai before unwinding on an Indian Ocean island, introducing little ones to the calm beaches of Mauritius, discovering the colours and flavours of Marrakech, or combining Cape Town with an unforgettable safari, October opens up some exceptional possibilities.

It’s also one of our favourite times of year to travel. Across much of southern Europe, the summer crowds have disappeared but the sea remains warm enough to swim. Further afield, destinations such as Dubai, Antigua and Mauritius are entering some of their finest months of the year, with glorious weather, excellent conditions and a wonderful atmosphere as the new season gets underway.

In this guide, we’ve rounded up the luxury holidays we’d genuinely recommend for October half term 2026. From European escapes with late-season sunshine to long-haul adventures designed with families in mind, these are the destinations we’d be looking at first.

When is October half term in the UK?

For most schools in England and Wales, October half term falls between Monday 26 October and Friday 30 October 2026, although dates can vary slightly depending on your local authority. Scotland and Northern Ireland often have different school holiday dates, so it’s always worth checking before booking.

October half term is also one of the busiest weeks in the travel calendar, particularly for family-friendly resorts and long-haul destinations. If you’re travelling during the school holidays, we’d always recommend booking as early as possible to secure your preferred flights, accommodation and room types.

The best luxury holidays for October half term 2026

October half term always arrives at exactly the right moment.

The summer holidays feel like a distant memory, the evenings are drawing in, and for many families it’s the first real opportunity to press pause before the run-up to Christmas begins. Whether you’re looking for guaranteed sunshine, a long-haul adventure or simply somewhere that still feels gloriously warm without the intensity of midsummer, late October opens up some exceptional possibilities.

It’s also one of our favourite times of year to travel.

Across much of the Mediterranean, the sea is still warm enough to swim in, but the beaches are noticeably quieter than they are in August. The UAE begins to emerge from the summer heat, making it one of the best times to experience Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Meanwhile, destinations like Mauritius, Antigua and South Africa are entering some of their most rewarding seasons, whether that’s for beach holidays, wildlife encounters or multi-destination itineraries.

Choosing where to go, however, isn’t always straightforward.

Some families are looking for a short flight and a week by the sea. Others want to make the most of the school holidays with a once-in-a-lifetime adventure, perhaps combining Cape Town with a safari, or Dubai with the Maldives or Sri Lanka. The right destination often depends just as much on the style of holiday you’re hoping for as it does the weather.

With that in mind, we’ve rounded up the luxury destinations we’d genuinely recommend for October half term 2026. From European favourites still enjoying late-season sunshine to Indian Ocean islands, Caribbean escapes and unforgettable family adventures, these are the places we’d be looking first.

Dubai, UAE

Following the recent FCDO update, we’re delighted to have Dubai back on our October half-term recommendations. With flights operating as normal, travel insurance once again available for most travellers and the city’s winter season getting underway, it feels like the perfect time to rediscover one of the world’s great family destinations. If you’d like to read more about the latest guidance and what it means for travellers, you can also take a look at our guide to the recent UAE travel update.

By late October, the city’s intense summer heat has eased into warm, sunny days of around 33°C, making it one of the very best times to visit. Beaches, pools and outdoor dining are once again firmly on the agenda, while attractions such as Dubai Miracle Garden reopen for the season and the city’s packed events calendar begins to come alive.

What makes Dubai such a brilliant choice for October half term is its versatility. Families with younger children can spend mornings on immaculate beaches before cooling off at world-class waterparks like Aquaventure or Wild Wadi, while older children and teenagers have everything from desert dune bashing and camel rides to indoor skiing, the Museum of the Future and spectacular views from the Burj Khalifa. Parents, meanwhile, are just as well catered for, with outstanding restaurants, beautiful beach clubs, exceptional spas and some of the finest luxury hotels in the Middle East.

For families wanting to be right on the beach, Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab is already one of the city’s standout new openings. Positioned on its own peninsula beside the iconic Burj Al Arab (currently undergoing an extensive renovation), the resort combines striking contemporary design with expansive swimming pools, a beautiful private beach and an excellent collection of restaurants, all centred around its elegant new superyacht marina.

Those looking for a more urban stay should consider One&Only One Za’abeel. One of Dubai’s most talked-about hotels, it pairs bold architecture with beautifully designed rooms, outstanding dining and easy access to Downtown Dubai, making it ideal for families keen to balance sightseeing with time to relax. We’re also huge fans of One&Only The Palm, one of Dubai’s true luxury classics. Tucked away on the quieter western crescent of Palm Jumeirah, it offers a much more intimate, resort-style experience than many of the city’s newer openings, with elegant Moorish-inspired architecture, beautiful gardens, a private stretch of beach and one of Dubai’s finest pools.

For families who measure a holiday by the quality of its waterpark, both Atlantis The Palm and its newer sibling, Atlantis The Royal, are hard to beat. Guests at either hotel enjoy complimentary access to Aquaventure World, one of the largest and most exciting waterparks anywhere in the world. Atlantis The Palm remains the family favourite, while Atlantis The Royal brings a more exclusive feel, with striking architecture, exceptional dining and an elevated luxury experience.

Dubai also lends itself beautifully to multi-destination holidays. Daily direct flights connect the city with the Maldives, Mauritius and Sri Lanka in around four to six hours, making it remarkably easy to pair a few days of city life with a second week on an Indian Ocean beach. It’s one of our favourite ways to experience the region, particularly during the school holidays, when making the most of every day away really counts.

Mauritius, Indian Ocean

If your idea of October half term centres around warm seas, powder-soft beaches and slowing the pace, Mauritius is difficult to beat.

October marks the beginning of the island’s warmer season, with temperatures typically sitting between 25°C and 28°C, low humidity and plenty of sunshine. The lagoons are calm, the beaches are idyllic and, with only a small time difference from the UK, it’s one of the easiest long-haul destinations for families travelling with younger children.

Mauritius has a wonderful knack for appealing to every generation. Younger children can spend hours paddling in the island’s sheltered lagoons, while older siblings can learn to sail, snorkel vibrant coral reefs or try paddle boarding and kayaking. Parents, meanwhile, can finally switch off, whether that’s over a long lunch by the beach, a round of golf on championship courses or a morning in one of the island’s exceptional spas.

Many of the island’s leading resorts have invested heavily in outstanding children’s clubs, dedicated teens’ programmes and spacious family suites, meaning everyone can holiday at their own pace before coming together again for sunset dinners overlooking the Indian Ocean.

We’re particularly fond of Four Seasons Resort Mauritius at Anahita, which has recently reopened following an extensive renovation. Spacious private villas, outstanding children’s facilities and access to the spectacular Île aux Cerfs Golf Club make it a perennial favourite with families. For something more contemporary, LUX* Grand Baie brings stylish design, exceptional dining and a vibrant atmosphere, while Shangri-La Le Touessrok remains one of the island’s great classics, with beautiful beaches, complimentary access to Île aux Cerfs and superb watersports.

Mauritius also pairs beautifully with Dubai, with direct flights taking around six and a half hours, making it one of our favourite multi-destination holidays for families looking to combine city excitement with a week on the beach.

Cape Town & Safari, South Africa

If you’ve been waiting for the right time to introduce your children to safari, October is one of our favourite months to do it.

Spring has arrived in South Africa, bringing mild temperatures, colourful wildflowers and longer days in Cape Town, while many safari destinations offer excellent game viewing before the summer rains arrive. It also happens to be whale watching season along parts of the Cape coast, making this one of those rare trips where beaches, wildlife, vineyards and vibrant city life all come together in a single holiday.

Cape Town is a brilliant place to begin. Families can ride the cable car up Table Mountain, visit the resident penguins at Boulders Beach, explore the V&A Waterfront or spend a day touring the Cape Peninsula. It’s a city that’s wonderfully easy to explore with children, balancing outdoor adventure with world-class restaurants, beautiful beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.

For somewhere to stay, One&Only Cape Town continues to be one of the city’s finest family hotels, overlooking the marina with Table Mountain providing an unforgettable backdrop. Those looking for something more intimate might prefer Ellerman House, a beautiful boutique hotel in Bantry Bay, renowned for its exceptional service, remarkable South African art collection and spectacular ocean views.

From Cape Town, it’s an easy onward flight to one of South Africa’s outstanding private game reserves. At the very top end, Singita Boulders Lodge sets the benchmark, pairing extraordinary conservation work with some of the continent’s most beautiful lodges and exceptional guiding. Royal Malewane is equally impressive, renowned for its lavish suites, world-class service and some of Africa’s most experienced safari guides. For families looking for something slightly more accessible without compromising on luxury, Lion Sands offers elegant riverside lodges, fantastic Big Five sightings and the unforgettable opportunity to spend a night beneath the stars in one of its famous luxury treehouses.

One of the things we love most about this itinerary is the contrast. One day you’re watching African penguins waddle across the beach; the next you’re spotting elephants, lions and leopards on an early morning game drive. Few family holidays offer quite so many unforgettable moments.

Tenerife, Canary Islands

If you’d rather spend your October half term on the beach than in the air, Tenerife is one of the easiest recommendations we make.

Just over four hours from the UK, the island enjoys year-round sunshine, with October temperatures typically hovering between 25°C and 28°C. The sea is still beautifully warm after the summer months, making it ideal for swimming, snorkelling and days spent by the coast.

Tenerife has long been a favourite with families, but it’s worth looking beyond the familiar resorts. The island offers an incredible mix of volcanic landscapes, charming villages, whale and dolphin watching, black-sand beaches and one of Spain’s most spectacular national parks, all centred around the dramatic peak of Mount Teide.

We’re in love with Bahía del Duque, one of Tenerife’s enduring luxury classics. Set directly on Costa Adeje’s golden coastline, it combines elegant Canarian architecture with beautiful tropical gardens, outstanding restaurants and exceptional family facilities, making it a favourite for guests returning year after year.

For something altogether more contemporary, The Ritz-Carlton Tenerife, Abama occupies one of the island’s most dramatic settings. Instantly recognisable by its iconic terracotta-pink, Moorish-inspired architecture, the resort sits high above the Atlantic with sweeping ocean views, its own secluded beach, a championship golf course and an outstanding Ritz Kids programme. It’s a wonderful choice for families looking for plenty to keep every generation entertained, while still enjoying a real sense of space and tranquillity.

With dependable sunshine, excellent flight times and some of Europe’s finest family resorts, Tenerife proves you don’t always have to travel halfway around the world to enjoy a luxurious October escape.

Crete, Greek Islands

If you’re hoping to hold onto summer for just a little longer, Crete is one of our favourite places to do it. October often brings warm days of around 24–26°C, the sea is still beautifully inviting after the long summer, and many of the island’s most popular beaches and towns have settled into a gentler rhythm once the school holiday crowds have dispersed.

Crete offers far more than simply a week by the pool. Families can explore Chania’s beautiful Venetian harbour, discover secluded beaches and hidden coves, head into the White Mountains for traditional villages and local tavernas, or take to the water on boat trips along the island’s spectacular coastline. It’s an easy destination to enjoy at your own pace.

Just outside Chania, Domes Zeen Chania blends contemporary design with a wonderfully relaxed atmosphere, making it a superb choice for younger families. Spacious suites and villas, thoughtful children’s facilities and easy access to both the beach and Chania’s historic old town mean you don’t have to choose between a resort holiday and exploring the island. If you’re considering a stay with Domes, we’ve also put together a guide to the collection to help you decide which resort is the best fit.

Hidden within its own sheltered bay on Crete’s north-east coast, Daios Cove has earned its reputation as one of Greece’s standout luxury resorts. Calm, turquoise water, exceptional service and an outstanding wellness offering make it just as appealing for parents as it is for children, while spacious family accommodation and watersports ensure there’s plenty to keep everyone entertained.

For families looking for something larger, The Royal Senses Resort & Spa Crete, Curio Collection by Hilton combines sweeping sea views with impressive facilities, including multiple pools, a waterpark, children’s club and an excellent spa. It’s the sort of resort where younger children can happily spend hours racing between the slides and splash zones, while parents enjoy a slower afternoon overlooking the Cretan coastline.

With direct flights from the UK taking around four hours, Crete remains one of the easiest ways to enjoy Mediterranean sunshine during October half term, without committing to a long-haul journey.

Antigua, Caribbean

Antigua has been winning over families for decades, and once you arrive, it’s easy to see why. Calm turquoise bays, warm Caribbean waters and a wonderfully easy-going atmosphere make it the sort of place where days naturally slow down. Children disappear off with snorkels and paddleboards, parents settle into a good book beneath a palm tree, and suddenly a week doesn’t feel nearly long enough.

October offers a quieter side of the island. While brief tropical showers are still possible, they’re often short-lived, leaving plenty of time to enjoy Antigua’s spectacular coastline, sailing excursions and some of the Caribbean’s finest beaches. It’s also a great time to take advantage of attractive offers at many of the island’s leading luxury resorts.

Carlisle Bay continues to be one of our favourite recommendations for families. Set on a beautiful horseshoe bay backed by rainforest, its spacious beachfront suites, excellent children’s clubs and superb watersports create an effortless balance between relaxation and adventure.

For those celebrating a special occasion, Jumby Bay Island offers something spectacular. Reached by a short private boat transfer, this exclusive island retreat is wonderfully peaceful, with no cars, pristine beaches, exceptional dining and bicycles replacing taxis as the easiest way to explore.

Whether you’re looking for a classic Caribbean beach holiday or somewhere to truly switch off together before winter arrives, Antigua remains one of the region’s most rewarding family escapes.

Marrakech, Morocco

By the time October half term arrives, Marrakech is arguably at its best. The intense summer heat has eased into warm, comfortable days of around 28°C, making it the perfect time to explore the city on foot, linger over long lunches in leafy courtyards or venture into the Atlas Mountains.

It’s a destination that offers something completely different to a traditional beach holiday. Families can lose themselves in the winding souks, discover the beautifully restored Bahia Palace, visit the vibrant Jardin Majorelle or head into the Agafay Desert for camel rides, quad biking and unforgettable dinners beneath the stars. Older children, in particular, tend to love the energy of the city and the variety each day brings.

The Oberoi Marrakech is a wonderful choice for families looking to escape the bustle of the city without being far from it. Set within acres of fragrant citrus orchards and ancient olive groves, the resort combines grand Moroccan architecture with beautifully spacious villas, many with private pools, creating a real sense of peace and privacy. Our Journey & Experiences Manager, Helen Risi, recently stayed here herself and came away thoroughly impressed by the warm hospitality, exceptional dining and the feeling of space throughout the resort. If you’re considering a stay, we’d also recommend reading her full review for a closer look at what makes The Oberoi so special.

Just outside the city walls, Amanjena offers an altogether slower pace. Inspired by traditional Moorish architecture and surrounded by olive groves and palm trees, it’s one of those rare places where you feel yourself unwind almost immediately. Spacious pavilions, tranquil gardens and one of Morocco’s finest spas make it a wonderful choice for families wanting space and privacy.

For those who prefer to stay in the heart of the old city, La Sultana Marrakech places you within walking distance of many of the medina’s most famous sights. With its intimate atmosphere, rooftop terraces and beautiful courtyards, it’s an elegant base from which to experience one of North Africa’s most captivating cities.

At just three and a half hours from the UK, Marrakech is one of the easiest ways to enjoy guaranteed warmth during October half term, while offering a holiday that’s every bit as enriching as it is relaxing.
